Sam’s picture is one of my favorites because there is such a visceral and profound sadness in his eyes. This picture reads to me as a true cry for help, capturing the human condition as felt by countless scores of voiceless people who feel hopeless on a daily basis. It also doesn’t hurt that the couch/bed is blocking a door to symbolically suggest that Sam has constructed his own life in a way in which there is no escape. GOOD JOB, SAM!
